Basnet completed his early schooling in Shillong, India, and completed his higher studies at St. Joseph's College in Darjeeling. He earned a business degree, but his love for film and cameras led him to pursue his passion and become a cinematographer.

After gaining some basic camera education, Basnet returned to Nepal and started making overseas employment, information, and news shows connected to foreign employment in Nepal Television. Basnet then delved into documentaries and commercials after shooting and broadcasting 52 episodes. In 2054 B.S, he founded Krishna Films in Dillibazar with Baburaja KC (Ujjwal) and Gopal Baskota.

He is worked in more then 3000 music videos, half dozen film and tv film as cinematrographer. He not only cinematrographer but also direction and modeling in them, making him a versatile personality. He has appeared in several songs, including Bhariya Dai, Mohni Bolima, Mayale Mayo, and Kalipare Dai.

Apart from being a celebrated cinematographer, Basnet is also a philanthropist at heart. He is actively involved in social works. He is a founding member, ex-chairperson, and current advisor of Gairi Tole Youth Club, which has organized multiple health camps, sanitation programs, and awareness activities.
